On white solder mask PCB, the silk screen can be black.
And sometimes other different colors may be used as well.
Function of silk screen can be separated as follows:
Identification
For PCB Designer: P/N, Symbol, Logo, Assembly Remark, Component Code, etc.
For PCB Maker: Manufacturing P/N, UL Logo, Serial Number, etc.
Record
For PCB Designer: Version of design, Date of design completion, etc.
For PCB Maker: Manufacturing date code, manufacturing version, etc.
